Small Business Highlight: Metropolitan Bakery

May 5, 2023

Just a short walk from the Annex and The Touraine is one of our many favorite small businesses in the neighborhood, Metropolitan Bakery. This picturesque bakery sits on the corner of S 19th Street and Manning Street with easy access to Rittenhouse Square. We’re highlighting all our go-to items to snack on from Metropolitan Bakery and why you should visit this neighborhood staple.

Much More than a Bakery

Metropolitan Bakery has been serving up freshly baked goods, pastries, snacks, and its famous granola to Philadelphians since 1993. What makes this bakery so special is its story and its process. Founded by two friends, the bakery came about from a shared passion for food, travel, and European-style baked goods. Metropolitan Bakery believes in the art of old-world baking—using natural ingredients and a combination of wild yeasts, flour, water, and a catalyst such as mashed bananas or raisins to start the process of making artisan bread.

With four locations throughout Philadelphia, each Metropolitan Bakery has a similar but unique menu. The Rittenhouse Square location features more than a dozen varieties of bread from French baguette to raisin nut, pumpernickel to cracked wheat, and select varieties only available on specific days of the week (the chocolate cherry on Fridays is delicious). Not only is this bakery a great place to stock up on your loaf of the week, but they also offer breakfast items, sweets, spreads, soups, ice cream and select grocery items like eggs and coffee.

This bakery is the perfect place to catch up with friends over a cup of coffee or work remotely, with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating options.

Experience Metropolitan Bakery

We’ve had the fortunate pleasure of seeing Metropolitan Bakery grow over the last 25 years. The residents and team at Spruce Street Commons frequent the bakery often for a cup of coffee or a sweet treat after lunch.

If you haven’t had the chance to visit, add it to your bucket list next time you're in Philadelphia. If you’re in need of a place to stay, check out our fully furnished travel apartments available to rent for as little as two nights or for as long as you’d like.
